Installed Fire Sprinklers in Colorado Convention
Center Expansion
Project
The Colorado Convention Center will double in size
by December 2004. It's part of $268 million expansion
that will give this center 600,000 square feet of contiguous
exhibit space. The expansion also includes a 50,000
square foot ballroom and 45 meeting rooms.
Western States Fire Protection Company is installing
fire sprinkler systems for the Colorado Convention
Center expansion project.

The project consists of approximately 1,400,000 square

Space
Work includes:
- 300,000
square feet of exhibit hall space
- 50,000
square feet ballroom
- 20,000
square feet of additional meeting room space
- 5,000

The Colorado Convention Center has a street and a
light-rail commuter train that wraps around it. With
over 14,000 fire sprinklers, the expansion is divided
into 43 separate sprinkler systems. Of these, 25 are
wet pipe and 18 are dry pipe fire sprinkler systems.

Room

The expansion
also includes 58 fire hose valve stations. The valve
stations are fed from 2 – 2,000 gpm,
gallons per minute fire pumps, from the existing building.
The valve room has a variety of system control valves.
Such valves include; test and drain, dry pipe and wet
pipe valves. The black pipes in the picture are connected
to wet pipe butterfly valves and the silver pipes are
connected to dry pipe valves.

Speer
Blvd. Blade
|
The 14'th Street Blade is a sophisticated ceiling.
It was a challenge installing fire sprinkler pipe in
this ceiling because it slopes in two directions and
is 100 feet above ground. It was difficult finding
a lift that big and then maneuvering it in between
the steel beams.

Fire
Sprinklers in Undulating Panels
|
Undulating panels are located above the street that
wraps around the Colorado Convention Center. Fire sprinklers
had to be installed in the high and low points of the
panels so they would not interfere with each other's
spray patterns.

Fire
Sprinklers for Light Rail System

Over 2,000 dry pendant fire sprinklers are located
in the ceiling above the light rail system.
