Western
States Fire Protection installed fire sprinkler systems
in the Embassy Suites Hotel, a 12 story building
with a penthouse, in downtown Kansas City.
Only the first floor, basement and parking garage were previously fitted
with sprinklers. Western States Fire Protection had to rework the systems
in those areas to bring them up to current standards. This included replacing
the existing fire pump. |

A
wet pipe fire sprinkler system was used throughout
the building except in the electrical and elevator
equipment rooms where firecycle systems were installed
. Firecycle systems use a resetable detection design
to protect from unnecessary water discharge. It turns
itself on when there’s a fire and then turns
itself off when the fire is out. If the fire should
reignite, it turns itself on again and continues
to cycle as needed.
In the parking garage there is a dry-pipe fire sprinkler system. In these
systems pipes are pressurized with air instead of water. They are commonly
used in unheated buildings where there is a potential for freezing. |

Western

alarm control panel to monitor existing and new fire
alarm devices such as flow switches, tamper switches
and smoke detectors.

The
retrofit of all suite levels meant holes had to be
cut in the existing soffits in each room to install
the fire sprinklers. The holes were then patched
up and wallpaper and paint were selected to match
the existing decor in each room.
In the atrium hallways sheet rock soffits were built to conceal new fire
sprinkler piping. The wallpaper, painting, soffits and fire alarm work
were all done under Western States Fire Protection's contract by subcontractors.
In the picture to the right you see a sidewall fire sprinkler head on the
side of the soffit and a pendent sprinkler head on the bottom of the soffit. |

In
the pool room you see poly coated upright pendant
fire sprinkler heads. These fire sprinkler heads
were used here because there is not a ceiling.

On
the ceiling of the banquet room concealed fire sprinkler
heads were used because they are less noticeable
than other sprinkler heads.

Because
the hotel was open during the course of the project,
scheduling was an important consideration. Western
States Fire Protection planned its work around the
hotel's scheduled use of each room, kept noise to
a minimum and kept work areas clean. During the Big
12 Basketball Tournament and again during the Big
12 Football Championship it was necessary to complete
installation on the floors currently being worked
on, demobilize and then remobilize after the events
were over.
