Western
States Fire Protection Company provided the Automatic
Fire Sprinkler System for the new Biomedical Research
Complex Facility 1, a network of laboratory space,
flexibly designed to respond to the ever-changing needs
of biomedical science and will enrich research in critical
interdisciplinary areas. Sections of the buildings
and floors will be devoted to the study of cancer,
neuroscience, molecular biology and structure, genetics
and genetic diseases, and bioscience research.
The project is comprised of two buildings, north
and south (620,450 square feet and $222 million dollars)
for the University of Colorado Health Science Center
at the Fitzsimons campus. Included within the facility
are approximately 241 separate lab modules including
core lab facilities, and a 50,000 SF vivarium that
is projected to hold approximately 90,000 mice. The
north building, which houses the vivarium, is nine
stories tall and has an education component consisting
of two auditoriums and 15,000 SF of classrooms. The
south building is a 12-story high rise that houses
the majority of the core lab facilities including
a radioisotope lab and a carcinogen lab. Included
in the project is the 19,000 SF Hensel Phelps Auditorium
Center, which houses both the pre-function area and
two tiered-seating, lecture style, auditoriums. The
250-seat research auditorium and the 150-seat education
auditorium include high-speed wireless Internet technology
available for the benefit of all users of the facilities.
The facility was completed in the July 2004.
